Garbage & Recycling

Garbage Collection

Pick up:
  • North side is Wednesdays
  • South side is Thursdays
Garbage must be out by 8:00 am.

The Town Utility Bylaw defines garbage as: refuse of animal material, vegetable matter or any other matter which has been used or intended for use as food.

Garbage can be placed out in one of two ways:
  • in a garbage can with a capacity of not more than 24 gallons, a height of not more than 30 inches and a diameter of not more than 24 inches and not weighing more than 50 pounds OR
  • In a garbage receptacle constructed of durable material which provides air ventilation, a door at least one foot off the ground and be completely enclosed and inaccessible to animals and weather. The preference is for all owners to construct garbage receptacles.
Garbage must always be bagged before being placed in a can or receptacle. Please safely dispose of all sharp objects. Loose garbage will not be picked up.
  • Please place bags near property line.
  • Homes and businesses are responsible to the centre line of the lane behind their property. It is the owner’s responsibility to clean up loose material and weeds on a regular basis.
  • Direct, unobstructed access for garbage equipment must be observed. Lanes are not to be used for storage and/or disposal of any materials including appliances, landscaping material, vehicles, construction or renovation material, etc. Keep these materials in your yard until you have arranged for disposal or storage.

Grass or Compost Collection
  • Pick up – Tuesdays during the months of May to October, and must be out by 8:00 a.m.
Town staff will begin collecting yard waste every Tuesday beginning April 12th and continuing until October.

Crews will pick up any grass or leaves that are deposited in approved non-corrosive, durable metal, plastic or recyclable paper bag containers, which must not weigh more than 50 pounds (23 kilograms). Please place containers for grass pick up in your back alley by 8:00 a.m. each Tuesday. If you do not have a back alley, containers should be placed in the front, where your regular garbage is left. Branches must be bundled and cut in lengths of not more that four feet.

Plastic garbage bags containing yard refuse will NOT be picked up as they cannot be composted.

There are four transfer stations located within the boundaries of the County of Lethbridge. They are located at Picture Butte, Coaldale, Iron Springs and Nobleford.
All household waste and garbage will be dumped into the compaction bins found at each of these sites. When these are full, they will be hauled to the Regional Landfill site for emptying.
Some wastes, such as empty pesticide containers, metal objects (not car bodies) tires, etc. are stored in selected fenced areas. Please follow the instructions of the Site Supervisor in disposing of these materials.
Burnable material such as lumber, tree stumps, etc. can be taken to all of the sites. However, burning will only take place at the Iron Springs location. Please follow the instructions of the Site Supervisor for proper placement in the designated area. Do not ignite your burnable material. This is done by the Site Supervisor.
When transporting your waste material to the Waste Transfer Stations, please have your load properly secured and covered.
Dry waste or rubble is material with little or no moisture, has no odor, and will not harbor insects and rodents. Concrete construction debris and waste material from building demolition are examples of material that fit into this category and can be hauled to the Iron Springs site for deposit.
Used oil collection – not to be contaminated by solvents or antifreeze, etc.
There will be no fee for members (persons living in the County of Lethbridge, Town of Picture Butte or the Village of Nobleford) for depositing household waste or garbage at any of the transfer stations.
